I am interested in developing a personal language of metal and repeated unions, experimentation and storytelling. “I study forms in nature and in human culture: how they occur, why they occur and their evolution. In my work I focus on how these forms appear in living organisms, geological features or man-made objects. My research began in Petra, Jordan, studying Nabataean sculpture and architecture, and has expanded to include its influences and ancient abstract geometric sculpture from throughout the region, from Jordan to Yemen.” | “Studio le forme in natura e nella cultura umana: come avvengono, perché avvengono e la loro evoluzione. Nel mio lavoro mi concentro su come queste forme appaiono negli organismi viventi, nelle caratteristiche geologiche o negli oggetti realizzati dall’uomo. “Yes, that is something that intrigues me about Willem’s work. Maybe he is not a “mad scientist” after all, but rather an archaeologist of sorts who has come from the distant future, bringing with him material remains or “evidence” from our contemporary civilization which he dug up somewhere in an effort to understand mankind in the early twenty-first century. […] I guess that’s why his work sometimes appears both archaic and futuristic at the same time. Willem seem to be talking about contemporary society from a more or less outside position, as though you were looking at us from an entirely different perspective and commenting on the absurdities you discover in our culture[…]. But this being “off” is what makes the works so fascinating”. | “Sì, anche questo è un aspetto che mi incuriosisce del lavoro di Willem.
