Every now and then I make a marble ear. Lovely to do in and wonderful but also made of stone. It harkens back to an old fairy tale in which the marshal, in the service of a tyrannical king, unscrews his ear and puts it “to listen” somewhere in the bushes. Later he retrieves his ear again, screws it to his head and hears what the people say about the king and his retinue. Usually not without consequences! Hearing, listening, understanding is of all times.
